Choosing the right rig

It’s easy to read articles or watch TV shows and be convinced that you need some certain caliber just as it is easy to have your brother-in-law convince you that you need the 900 Nitro Magnum like he has because nothing else will work.

Now, I have been known to say “If it’s worth killing, it’s worth overkilling” however I think that anyone deciding on what cartridge they want to buy that one special rifle in should really consider what they are going to use it for. If you want to shoot a couple whitetails every year from your ladder stand and enjoy shooting a lot of steel all summer why would you buy an ultralight 30-378 Weatherby Magnum? Unnecessary and you won’t enjoy it - unless your goal is to make sure no-one has a “bigger” (and less sensible) rifle in deer camp.

I think that folks who are considering buying a high-end rifle (and maybe only one, ever) should really put some thought into what they want out of it. Matching the right rifle, optic, cartridge , and bullet will help you optimize your enjoyment of your purchase.
